Refinement

“Chop wood, carry water.” That Buddhist saying tells us that enlightenment is not about a grand achievement or profound realization. Rather, enlightenment is found in the mundane details of everyday life. And that is what the Universe wants us to remember today: how we do something is often more important than what we do. In truth, most of us push through our days mindlessly completing tasks. We have a long to-do list and check off the boxes until we are finished. Sometimes begrudgingly and with resentment. Then we wonder why we are not getting anywhere and why sometimes our lives feel so meaningless, despite doing so much. Today, set your intentions to refine your life rather than making significant, massive changes or moves. The goal of life truly isn’t achievement. The goal is awareness. One does not strive to chop wood or carry water “better” than anyone else. The art of refinement is about bringing more awareness to your daily life and, being fully present in everything you do. The art of refinement teaches us to be patient, trust ourselves, and pay attention to details. It teaches us to enjoy every tiny step on this journey of life, instead of rushing and waiting for the big moment for things to change. Enlightenment and profound change seldom resemble an explosion of fireworks. Instead, they are more like whittling away, little by little, of your mind into deeper refinement, more profound awareness. It’s not one giant leap, but a series of tiny steps. And one day, on a random afternoon, you will look back and realize how far you have come. Today, let patience and presence be your guide.

Just for today, I am willing to take the first step towards changing my life, no matter how small it is. I recognize that every obstacle is but a stepping stone. My good cannot be stopped. When I make a mistake I know it is all part of the learning process. I am willing to learn. I act as if I already have what I want. It is an excellent way of attracting happiness into my life. I am willing to see my world in a whole new way. I am safe, divinely guided, protected and loved. Everything is working out for my highest good. And so it is.
